Overview

Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald irrumpió en el mundo literario a principios de los años 20, una época que el propio Fitzgerald bautizaría como la Era del Jazz. Su vida, compleja y difícil, estuvo marcada por su relación con Zelda Sayre, una “top girl” amante del lujo y la diversión cuya vida, en su última etapa, transcurrió entre hospitales psiquiátricos, para acabar falleciendo en el incendio del Highland Hospital en 1948.
Entre novela y novela, y para resolver angustias económicas, Fitzgerald escribía cuentos que publicaba en las revistas más importantes del momento, Saturday Evening Post, Collier´s Magazine y Esquire. De los más de ciento cincuenta cuentos que escribió, Fitzgerald escogió 46 y los publicó en cuatro libros: Flappers y filósofos; Todos los hombres tristes; Toque de diana; y Cuentos de la Era del Jazz.
Enfermo, alcoholizado, a finales de los años cuarenta sufrió dos ataques cardíacos. El segundo lo llevó a la muerte en diciembre de 1940. Fitzgerald murió considerándose a sí mismo como un escritor fracasado. Aunque algunos de sus libros alcanzaron importantes éxitos de ventas, la crítica especializada de la época nunca lo consideró un gran escritor, y su obra parecía estar destinada a aparecer en la historia de la literatura como una nota a pie de página. Sin embargo, pocos años después de su muerte su figura empezó a ser rescatada, y a principios de los años sesenta su nombre estaba ya incluido entre los grandes escritores norteamericanos del siglo.
Cuentos de la Era del Jazz es quizá su libro de relatos más significativo, y contiene el que está considerado como su mejor cuento: “Un diamante tan grande como el Ritz”.

Prior to rejoining Wharton in 2011, Barbara served as the Dean and Schein Professor of Marketing at the School of Business Administration, University of Miami (from 2007 to 2011). Before becoming Dean at UM, she spent 17 years at Wharton as Silberberg Professor of Marketing.  She was also Vice Dean of the Wharton Undergraduate program. She is the author of Global Brand Power: Leveraging Branding for Long-Term Growth and co-author of The Grocery Revolution: The New Focus on the Consumer, which documented the changes in the grocery business in the mid-1990s when Walmart became a force in the industry.
